As summer comes to a close, we have a lot of news to share.  Thanks to the generosity of the Cook Foundation, the York County Rotary and our many friends and donors in the community, restoration of the large classroom and the renovation of the other rooms are progressing well.

Spring 2023 Newsletter

Dear Friends of the Woodville School,
We are so excited to announce that, with your help, we have met our match for the Cook Foundation grant!  These funds will be used to complete the kitchen and bathroom renovations, to build a new front porch, a display space, conference room and library.  We anticipate this work will be completed summer.

Spring 2022 Newsletter

Dear Friends of the Woodville School,

Spring is a busy time at the Woodville School.  As you will see driving south on Route 17, site work for the parking lot and landscaping is underway. Zandler Development Company, LLC, is our partner for this work, and Kay Van Dyke, AIA,  is serving as Clerk of the Works for the Foundation.  We are so excited to finally see this progress after being stalled by the pandemic. Weather permitting, we expect to complete the site work by early summer.

February 2022 Newsletter

Dear Friends of the Woodville School,

The year 2022 promises to be an exciting one for the Woodville School.  Our Scholars Committee consisting of leading scholars of African American history and museums will be working with Woodville's descendant community to create a list of questions to stimulate conversations regarding the history of Black education in Gloucester, its relation to national issues at the time, and the social institutions and activities surrounding it. These conversations will guide future research and interpretation at the Woodville School.

December 2021 Newsletter

Dear Friends of the Woodville School,

As 2021 comes to a close, we are looking back at all that we have accomplished during this challenging year.  In partnership with the filmmaker Aviva Kempner, The Kellogg Foundation, The Ciesla Foundation, and Gloucester County Public Schools, we hosted an online screening of the documentary, Rosenwald, followed by a panel discussion with the filmmaker. Woodville was happy to partner with the Gloucester Union Relief Association, Circle Up Mid-Pen and the First United Baptist Church for a wonderful Juneteenth celebration.

November 2021 Newsletter

Dear Friends of the Woodville School,

If you drive by the Woodville School this week, you will see the Happy Birthday Wes Wilson banner that the Foundation is displaying to show its deep appreciation for all of the work that Wes has done for the school and the community.

This month, in connection with Giving Tuesday, we are celebrating Wes on the occasion of his 90th birthday.

October 2021 Newsletter

Dear Friends of the Woodville School,

October began with the excellent news that the site plan for the entrance and parking area has been approved.  Bids will be going out this month and we hope that work can begin before the end of the year.  Completing this project will enable the School to get an occupancy permit for the building.

Dear Friends of the Woodville School,

It is back to school month and the Woodville School began the month with a wonderful celebration of the installation of the Woodville School Historical Highway Marker.  Despite the interference from the remnants of Hurricane Ida, over 50 community members joined the Board for this important milestone.

August 2021 Newsletter

Dear Friends of the Woodville School,

 SAVE THE DATE! Join us on September 1, 2021, (rain date, Sept. 2) at 4:30 PM to unveil the Historical Highway Marker in front of the school. There will be a brief program about the history of this important historic site, the ongoing efforts to restore it, and plans to interpret and document the rich African American history of Gloucester and the surrounding areas.

Dear Friends of the Woodville School,

We hope you were able to join us for an informative Juneteenth celebration that we co-sponsored with First United Baptist Church, and Circle Up Mid-Pen. Foundation Board members Bobby Ray and Wes Wilson gave excellent presentations on the history of the Woodville School and the history of Juneteenth.  Next year, we hope to add new partners as the celebration continues to grow,

Good News from the Woodville School!

Dear Friends and Neighbors of  Woodville: 
                                 
We have wonderful news and exciting challenges to share with you. The Commonwealth of Virginia appropriated funds for the Woodville School that will reimburse us for part of the cost of our planned new driveway and parking area. Until this work is completed, we cannot open our doors to the public.
